Rekindling Summer Fun - Remember how summer felt when we were kids? Huge swaths of unstructured time...nonstop water shenanigans...popsicles...lazing around outside...no problems…
It’s shocking how quickly summer went from the best time ever to a massive PITA once we became grown-ups!
Many of us spend the summer trying to figure out how to continue to do what we need to do (even though we have twice as much on our hands), totally failing, and feeling tons of stress and frustration. Then comes the yelling and losing our temper...gosh ain’t summer grand?
Here’s what I’ve learned over the years to make summer not only doable but actually fun:
Take a cue from your kid:
Summer is a blast for kids because they relax. They don’t have (or put) pressure on themselves to achieve, rush, or be the same as they are the rest of the year. We can’t do it exactly like they do, but I have yet to meet a parent who can’t take it down a notch. Here’s an example from my own life: I was planning to lead a workshop in July. Then I realized I didn’t want to have extra work on my plate, so you’ll have to wait for that awesomeness until Fall cause imma be paddleboarding instead ;)
Surrender to Summer:
Arguing with reality is the quickest way to lose your mind and become the worst Summertime Grinch. Summer's reality is that our kids are around more, and life is less structured. When we accept this with realistic expectations, we’re a lot less likely to snap. Real-life example #2: I listen to educational podcasts in the car to keep me up to speed on all topics related to parent work. Whelp, in the summer, that means I have a 9-year-old in the back seat asking questions like, “What does attachment parenting mean?” every five seconds. Because I'm connected to some realistic expectations, I settle into my summertime habit, which is to pause the audio the second he pipes up, and we end up having some deep conversations that would probably surprise you. It’s pretty awesome!
Sounds great, but...
Sounds great, but maybe your head is telling you this will never work, your kid is just too much, you don’t have the luxury to take pressure off yourself, and you KNOW it’s a matter of time before you blow a gasket.
If your biggest worry is keeping your cool this summer (NOT talking about temperature here)...
