You are not one voice. You're a whole inner committee.

There's the part of you that pushes and achieves. The part that goes quiet and keeps the peace. The part that snaps at your kids and then lies awake replaying it. The part that wants the change and the part that talks you out of it, every single time.

If that inner tug-of-war feels familiar, you're not broken and you're not "too much." You're a person carrying parts that have been working hard — some of them for a very long time — to keep you safe. Internal Family Systems coaching is how we get to know those parts, understand what they've been protecting, and help you respond to your life from something calmer underneath all of it.

I'm Ann Kaplan, an IFS-informed coach based in Denver, Colorado, and this is the work I love most.

What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is a model of the mind developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. Its core idea is deceptively simple: the mind is naturally made up of parts — and beneath all of them, everyone has a core Self that is calm, curious, and compassionate.

A few things make IFS different from "just think positive":

  • There are no bad parts. The part that overworks, the part that shuts down, the part that reaches for the second glass of wine — each one took on its role for a reason, usually to protect you from pain. When you stop fighting a part and get curious about it instead, it stops having to fight you.
  • Protectors and the parts they protect. Some parts manage your life so nothing hurts (the planner, the pleaser, the perfectionist). Some parts jump in when it already hurts (the anger, the numbing, the checking-out). Underneath, there are usually younger, more vulnerable parts carrying old burdens.
  • You already have what you need. In IFS, the goal isn't to add something you're missing. It's to help you lead from Self — that grounded, clear place that's already in you — so your parts can finally relax and trust you're at the wheel.

In our work together, "parts work" simply means learning to notice these parts, listen to them without being hijacked by them, and help them let go of jobs they never should have had to carry.

IFS Coaching vs. IFS Therapy: What's the Difference?

This is one of the most common questions I get, and it's an important one.

IFS coaching is not therapy, and I'm not your therapist. Therapy is treatment — it's the right place to work through diagnosed mental-health conditions, acute trauma, or crisis, and it's done by licensed clinicians. Coaching is different. It's forward-focused and growth-oriented, for people who are basically functioning in their lives and want to understand their patterns, shift how they show up, and make aligned decisions.

I use IFS as a lens and a framework — an IFS-informed approach — to help you do that. We're not diagnosing or treating; we're getting to know your inner system so you can lead it well.

Here's a simple way to tell which you might need: if you're in crisis, or you're carrying trauma that feels overwhelming to be near, therapy with a licensed professional is the right and caring choice — and I'm always glad to be one support alongside that work. If you're steady enough to be curious about your patterns and ready to grow, IFS coaching may be exactly the room you've been looking for.

How IFS Helps Parents (and Anyone Doing the Inner Work)

Most people find me through parenting — and IFS and parenting fit together beautifully.

Because here's what almost no parenting book tells you: the hardest part is what their behavior activates in you. The eye-roll that sends you from zero to sixty. The whining that makes a much younger part of you feel small and unseen. The moment you hear your own mother's voice come out of your mouth and think, that's not who I want to be.

That's parts work in real time. When we understand the part of you that gets triggered — how old it feels, what it's protecting, what it never got — you stop white-knuckling your reactions and start responding from Self. That's how generational cycles actually break: not through more discipline strategies, but through you, doing the inner work that changes what gets passed down.

IFS coaching is for the parent who's tired of reacting and ready to understand — see also why your child's behavior feels so triggering. And it's just as much for anyone — parent or not — who's ready to stop fighting themselves.

What Working Together Looks Like

【SESSION DETAILS — CONFIRM: session length, package/number of sessions, online vs. in-person Denver, pricing if shown on page】

Sessions are a calm, unhurried space. We slow down enough to actually notice what's happening inside you, and I guide you to get to know the parts that show up — with curiosity instead of judgment. You don't need to have read anything about IFS or know your "parts" in advance. You just need to be willing to look inward with me.

Over time, the shift people describe is less about "fixing" and more about relationship: a steadier connection to yourself, more room between a trigger and your response, and a quieter inner world.

Is IFS Coaching Right for You?

This work tends to be a strong fit if you:

  • Keep repeating patterns you understand intellectually but can't seem to change
  • Feel like there's a war going on inside you between what you want and what you do
  • Are a parent who's tired of being triggered and ready to do your own work
  • Want personal growth that goes deeper than mindset hacks and to-do lists
  • Are curious, reflective, and ready to look inward

It's probably not the right fit right now if you're in crisis or need treatment for a mental-health condition — in that case, therapy with a licensed clinician comes first, and I'm happy to be a support alongside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IFS coaching?

IFS (Internal Family Systems) coaching uses the "parts" model of the mind to help you understand the different inner voices driving your behavior — and to lead from your calm, grounded core Self. It's a growth-focused, non-clinical way to change patterns that haven't budged with willpower alone.

Is IFS coaching the same as therapy?

No. Therapy is treatment for mental-health conditions, provided by licensed clinicians. IFS coaching is forward-focused personal-growth work for people who are functioning and want to understand and shift their patterns. I'm an IFS-informed coach, not a therapist. If you're in crisis or need treatment, therapy comes first.

Do I need to know anything about IFS or my "parts" before we start?

Not at all. You don't need to have read a word about IFS. I guide the process — you just bring your willingness to look inward.

Do you only work with parents?

Parenting is where a lot of people find me, and IFS is powerful for the reactivity and generational patterns that come up in parenting. But this work is for anyone ready to stop fighting themselves — parent or not.
