Essence vs Personality in the Enneagram: Understanding Your True Self vs Your Patterns

enneagram Apr 29, 2026

You’re Probably Using the Enneagram… But Missing the Point

Most people come to the Enneagram for one reason:

They want to figure out who they are.

  • “What type am I?”
  • “Why do I do this?”
  • “Which number fits me best?”

And that’s not wrong.

It’s just… incomplete.

Because the Enneagram isn’t actually about telling you who you are.

It’s about showing you something much more uncomfortable:

What’s been running you this whole time.

A Quick Reality Check (From Me to You)

I once told someone they weren’t their type.

Flat out.

They said, “I think I’m a Four.”

And I said, “Are you sure? You’re definitely not a Four.”

Even now, I cringe thinking about it.

Not just because I might’ve been wrong—but because I shut down their process.

That moment is actually the perfect example of what this work isn’t.

The Enneagram isn’t about labeling people correctly.

It’s about helping them see themselves clearly.

And those are not the same thing.

What Is the Enneagram, Really?

If you’ve ever tried to explain it, you’ve probably said:

“It’s like a personality test… but deeper.”

Here’s a more accurate version:

The Enneagram is a system that helps you understand your personality—and then go beyond it.

It starts with personality.

But it doesn’t end there.

Essence vs Personality (The Core of Everything)

Let’s simplify this in a way that actually sticks:

Personality

  • The patterns you developed
  • The strategies you use to cope
  • The way you learned to navigate the world
  • The automatic reactions you default to

Essence

  • Your underlying nature
  • The part of you that is present, aware, and not reacting
  • The version of you that isn’t trying to prove, fix, control, or avoid
  • What you were before all the patterns formed

Here’s the key:

Your personality is something you built.
Your essence is what you are.

Why Personality Feels So “True”

Because it’s been running the show for a long time.

Your personality didn’t appear randomly.

It formed because, at some point, something felt off:

  • not safe enough
  • not supported enough
  • not seen enough

And your system adapted.

The Catch: Personality Can’t Give You What You’re Looking For

The very thing you built to get your needs met…

can only imitate the feeling you’re actually after.

It can create temporary relief—but not the real thing.

Because what you’re actually looking for…

is something you lost connection to.

The Real Goal Isn’t Self-Discovery—It’s Waking Up

The Enneagram was never meant to tell you who you are.
It was meant to show you how asleep you are.

And most of us?

We’re reacting more than we realize.

Why This Matters (Especially If You’re a Parent)

Your kids don’t just experience your behavior.

They experience your presence.

And there’s a big difference between:

  • reacting from your pattern
  • responding from awareness

What Growth Actually Looks Like

Not fixing yourself.

Not becoming perfect.

But:

  • noticing your patterns
  • creating space
  • remembering this isn’t all of who you are

That’s where choice comes back online.

A Different Way to Use the Enneagram

Yes—figure out your type.

But don’t stop there.

Start asking:

  • Where am I on autopilot?
  • What am I trying to get from this reaction?
  • What would it feel like to not follow it?

This Is Where Most People Get Stuck

You can understand all of this…

And still not actually experience it.

Because this isn’t just intellectual.

You don’t think your way back to essence.

You reconnect to it.

If You Want to Go Deeper Into This Work

This is exactly what we do inside my upcoming Virtual Living the Enneagram experience.

We start with personality—because that’s the entry point.

But then we go further:

  • understanding your patterns in real time
  • seeing how they’ve been shaping your life
  • and most importantly…
  • actually experiencing what it feels like to step out of them

Not in theory.

In real time.

Even if just for a moment.

And those moments? They change things.

A Better Question to Sit With

Not:

“What type am I?”

But:

“Is this me… or just my pattern?”

Gentle Next Step

Notice one moment today where you react automatically.

Pause.

And just ask the question.

You don’t have to fix it.

You just have to see it.

That’s where this starts.
