Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday! My eldest turns 21 today!
This boy who initiated me into motherhood is more than 2 decades old, which means I have been mothering for a loooong time. There is so much to say about this milestone, and all of it has been said before:
- He's a full-blown adult who can drive, vote, smoke, and drink now....AND
- He's still an adolescent (true story!) who needs parenting
- The firstborn is the trailblazer/guinea pig, and I made so many mistakes
- I feel old
- I can remember when I was 21, and it's hard not to compare us
- There was a time when it seemed like we might not get to this day (for more on this, see previous musings on Elijah's struggles with addiction and mental illness in his early teens)
- Etc., etc., etc.
As I try to write something meaningful about this day, I realize it's all been said, making it all both meaningFUL and meaningLESS. Ultimately, beyond any words, this moment calls for presence to the emotions, sensations, awareness, and connection of this day above all else.
And this calls for celebration!
This boy's entry onto planet Earth set in motion the self-development, exploration, education, and commitment that ultimately resulted in the coaching practice I run today. Heck, even these little nuggets of wisdom (?) you receive in your inbox every week all began with his birth! In a weird way, today is MY birthday too - the birth of myself as a mommy :)
