What Are You Bad At

What Are You Bad At? - "Embrace the Suck" - David Goggins
What are you bad at? - This year, iPEC (the institute that trained and certified me) hired me as a mentor coach and assistant trainer. It has been so fun to be back in the classroom and working with students, and it helps me maintain my client work at a high caliber.
At the same time, it’s been over 20 years since I’ve had to answer to a boss, or comply with anyone’s expectations but my own! The learning curve has been steep; I’ve made many mistakes and had to ask for lots of help. I feel awkward, insecure, and sometimes even embarrassed by my performance. I’ve been solidly inside my skillset for so long, I’m not used to being bad at stuff! I’m out of practice at sucking!
Embrace the Suck
I used to suck all the time. At my first job…starting my business…when I began playing guitar…I sucked at all of it. And when I became a parent, I sucked…real bad. And I kinda sucked again at each new chapter my kids went through. I was so good at sucking back then! Those were major growth moments and huge leaps forward for me.
Nowadays, I’m good at recognizing and holding space for others while they suck at stuff. It’s what I do for my kids as a mom, and what I do for my clients as a coach. But I forgot how to do it for myself!
How to Embrace the Suck
There’s no getting around the fact that learning something new starts with sucking at it, and we have to keep on trucking and sucking until we get good.
But we shouldn’t do it in a vacuum. I got good at guitar, running a business, and even parenting, thanks to coaches and teachers (yes, I have had professional help with my parenting over the years). It makes the sucking shorter and far less painful.
Whatever you’re sucking at right now, congratulations! You’re figuring something out instead of staying stuck, and I encourage you not to do it alone. Reach out for support - set up a FREE Discovery Call - and I will help you get through the suck to the other side where you’re kicking ass. And I promise to practice what I preach for myself, too!
